Days 48 & 49 and leg 13, Flagstaff - Chicago
The difference in time to CEST shrinks ever smaller as we make a technical stop in Chicago. Both of us have been here before, so we will continue eastwards already tomorrow.
The less famous brother.

Train was 2 hours delayed, Amtrak’s homepage told us, so we did not need to get out of bed for the lovely 04:15 scheduled departure. It is nevertheless still wise to get up early, as despite the 2-minute walk to the station you
need to cross the very heavily trafficked railway and you may have to wait for ages before the traffic has cleared.

This is how you make yourself comfortable. Amtrak’s long distance trains have reclining seats allowing you to almost lie down, making sleeping car tickets redundant (unless you really look for comfort and included meals). Getting up before 06:00 was
after all not too fun either.

A mechanical stop in scorching hot Albuquerque.

So you make serving size 4 pieces, but create rows with 3 pieces in each row? Someone should get fired.

Missouri is wreaking havoc in the state of Missouri. This is also why trains between Kansas City and St Louis are not running at the moment. Our train was also just barely above water level, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Los Angeles - Chicago
trains are suspended if the water level continues to rise.

Mississippi wasn’t too innocent either. Here in Fort Madison.

Seeing the Mississippi rush just barely underneath the bridge was quite unsettling, as had the bridge broken, there would not have been mucch to do.

What a suitable theme!

Finally, 3 hours after scheduled arrival time! We were further delayed right in the suburbs of Chicago by a person thinking it is a wise idea to dash across the railway while the red lights are flashing. It was a very close call, but the
police was still summoned to hopefully arrest the perpetrator.

The famous Navy Pier fireworks were just colouring the fog in different shades of the rainbow - the explosions were completely covered by the fog.
